Five-time Tour de France champion Tadej Pogačar has been forced to withdraw from the Vuelta a España following a horrific crash that left him with multiple injuries, including a broken collarbone requiring surgery.
The incident occurred during Stage 8 of the race when Pogačar reportedly lost control of his bike after a stone rolled onto the road. The sudden obstacle caused the Slovenian cyclist to crash violently, sending him over his handlebars in a frightening moment captured on race footage.
Medical evaluations later confirmed that Pogačar suffered a concussion, a displaced left clavicle fracture, and a stable cervical (C7) fracture, along with multiple abrasions. Despite the severity of the crash, team doctors stated there was no neurological damage, offering some relief to fans and the cycling community.
According to officials from UAE Team Emirates, the 26-year-old will undergo surgery on his collarbone, although the procedure will be delayed slightly due to concussion protocols. He remains under close medical supervision as recovery plans are put in place.
Pogačar had been leading the race comfortably and was widely considered the favorite to win, which would have seen him complete a rare achievement—winning all three Grand Tours. His withdrawal marks the first time in his career that he has abandoned a Grand Tour.
Following the crash, race organizers confirmed his exit, and fellow competitor Enric Mas inherited the race lead. Mas expressed sympathy, noting that taking the leader’s jersey under such circumstances was “not a good feeling.”
The cycling world has since rallied around Pogačar, with fans, teammates, and rivals sending messages of support as he begins his recovery journey.
