The community of West Leyden, New York, is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Eleanor “Nora” Gray, 17, and her father, Darrel Gray Jr., 52, who tragically died in a motor vehicle accident on Thursday, August 28, 2026, in Oneida County.
According to authorities, the fatal crash occurred at approximately 7 a.m. along Route 294 near Gleasman Road in the town of Ava. Darrel Gray Jr. was driving a 2024 Volkswagen Tiguan eastbound when the vehicle crossed into the westbound lane and collided head-on with a tractor-trailer.
Both Nora and her father were pronounced dead at the scene, leaving family members, friends, and the wider community in deep shock and sorrow.
Darrel Gray Jr. was a respected member of the Adirondack Central School District, where he served as the head coach of the modified football team. Known for his dedication, leadership, and commitment to young athletes, he made a lasting impact on the lives of many students.
